Top Tips

Allow plenty of time so meals are not rushed.

Eliminate distractions when eating or drinking – mobile phone, TV, etc.

Sit in an upright position for meals and drinks. Lying down when eating and drinking can make swallowing difficult and unsafe.

Remain sitting upright for 30 minutes after eating and drinking.

Avoid talking when eating or drinking.

Large mouthfuls can be difficult to swallow so take small bites of food and sip drinks.

Ensure swallowing is complete before taking another bite or sip.

Consider smaller, more frequent meals if eating is tiring.

Follow recommendations from Speech and Language Therapist or Dietitian on which foods should be avoided.

The patient should be fully alert before being offered food or drink.
